  • I straight pool I scratched without pocketing a ball. There were two object balls on the table, both behind the spot. My opponent now shoots but both balls are behind the spot. What is the correct way to handle this? Thanks.
    - Dave Leveton, Gainesville VA
  • When all remaining balls are behind the head string and you have ball in hand behind the head string, the closest ball to the head string is spotted. If two or more balls at an equal distance from the head string are nearest the head string, you may choose which ball to spot.

  • Do you know the game 101 where the pockets are labled 1,2,3,5,10,15 - you get the points for sinking the ball in the pocket - goal is to score exactly 101. Question is on a scratch - how many points are deducted. Situation - put 2 balls in the 15 pocket - now have 30 points scratch on the next 15 point ball, do you subtract 30 points (the scratched ball + 15 points) or just not get the 15 points due to the scractch?
    - Jim Buck, Longmont
  • Sorry, never heard of that game.

  • In any game where balls are to be spotted, under the old rule 3.22, balls are to be spotted in "ascending order", whereas in the newer rule 1.4 we no longer see the terms "ascending order", why the change ?
    - James Groleau, Hemet
  • The reason is that there is no advantage or disadvantage by spotting the balls in any particular order.

  • In 8 Ball, under the old rule 3.22, balls are to be spotted in ascending order, whereas in the newer rule 1.4 we no longer see the terms "ascending order", why the change ?
    - James Groleau, Hemet
  • That statement is not necessary in 8-Ball as balls are not spotted. Any ball that is pocketed or driven off of the table is not spotted. The only exception would be the 8-ball itself if it is made on the break, which is not a win, but the player has the option to spot the 8-ball and continue to shoot or re-rack and break again.
