- I was wondering have you found a way to make the most of your practice time? I usually just run through a bunch of drill shots that always seem to come up during matches. I am always looking to get the most out of the time I do have to practice.
- Rich Hollenbeck, Madison
- Hey Rich thanks for your question. Shooting shots that come up a lot during matches is a great drill. I always start my practice sessions with straight in stop shots because that shot always comes up and I take them for granted! They seem so easy but one flinch of the wrist of if you raise up even a little bit you're gonna miss the shot. That shot really gets all your fundamentals in line. If you have one of the spotted cue balls you want to make sure you pay attention to it and see if you're putting any spin on the ball. If you are then you know that you're putting english on the ball when you don't want to be. I then shoot a lot of shots that you see come up in almost every rack. Another good drill I work with is playing the ghost. I break, take ball in hand and then try and run out. I usually do races to 9. It's a pretty tough drill but really helps in making you take your time and pick the right pattern. I also try and play some 10 ball because it kinda takes the pressure off of getting good shape on the 9 ball so when I play in a tourney I don't stress out as much about getting position on it. I usually practice by myself for a good 2-3 hours and then I'll play some sets with somebody. You should always practice against somebody that either plays your level or better. I watched a ton of pool early in my career and took what I learned to the practice table! I would go up to some of the players, after they were done, and ask them about a particular shot and they would come show me what they did and I would shoot it over and over until I felt comfortable shooting it. Don't ever be afraid to ask the good players questions. Also, don't be afraid to play all the other games other than 9 ball. I shoot some straight pool and a little one pocket. Each game will help you with your 9 ball game. Watch as many videos and read as many books on billiards as you can. I neglected to do that earlier and I know now that my game would've been a lot better a long time ago if I would've just taken the time.
One last thing, I get a lot of people that come up and talk to me during my practice which gets me out of my zone so I just politely tell them that I can't be bothered and to come back in a couple hours and I would gladly play them some games or sets. Try not to let anything distract you during your practices. It's really hard when you're in the pool room but try and find a time that you know it may not be that busy and go in at that time, if that's possible. Daytime is usually slower so that's when I like to go in. I may still get a few people coming up to me but not as many as in the evening.
I hope I helped a little bit! Good luck and shoot straight!
Warm Regards,

- Do you have a standard practice routine or do you just work on things you need to improve on?
- Roger Keene, Charlotte
- Hey Roger,
I do not have a standard practice routine. I mostly think about my fundamentals every time I practice alone. If there are weaknesses I practice them but it is key to do shots over and over again until they sink in. I am looking not only for the physical factors but also the feeling of the hit and trying to memorize it.
Thanks,
Allison
